"As a lifelong mill worker I strongly identify with John’s working-class background as the story of America," said Congressman Michaud, who worked at the Great Northern Paper Company in Maine for 28 years, and is co-chair of the Congressional Labor and Working Families Caucus.

"John Edwards has the courage to tackle problems that other politicians simply ignore, like ending poverty in America and making trade work for working Americans," said Michaud. "He is the only candidate who has offered real plans to help struggling rural communities and to provide healthcare coverage for the 45 million uninsured Americans. I believe he is the best candidate to lead our country and the best chance Democrats have at taking back the White House."

Michaud emphasized Edwards’ electability in red states and cited Oklahoma as a conservative state where Edwards could beat any of the leading Republicans. He said he would be willing to campaign for Edwards in other states. "Edwards has a message," Michaud said. "He comes from the same working-class background I come from. He understands issues facing working-class men and women."

Michaud was elected to Congress in 2002 and has made economic development one of his top priorities, introducing legislation to increase investments

in economically distressed, rural areas. In Congress, he has served on the Committee for Veterans Affairs, the Committee for Transportation and Infrastructure, the Committee on Small Business, and as co-chair of the Congressional Labor and Working Families Caucus.

"I am honored to have Congressman Michaud’s support," said Edwards. "As chair of the Labor Caucus, Mike understands the needs of hardworking Americans, and I look forward to working with him to build support for an agenda of bold change to restore economic fairness in our country."
