Maine
Leads the Renaissance in Agriculture

Governor Baldacci, Backyard
Farms CEO Paul Sellew, and Hannaford CEO Ron Hodge admire a box of Backyard Beauties.
Were proud to bring a product to market which really is the best tasting
tomato anywhere in the world, said Hodge. In the background retired dairy
farmer Erik Walter appears dressed in overalls and a cap on the side of the companys
truck. Walter used to own some of Backyard Farms land and is pleased the
agricultural tradition of the area will continue with Backyard Farms state-of-the-art
greenhouse.

now part of Baxter State Park.
In Environmental News:
Last December Governor John E.
Baldacci announced that Katahdin Lake, along with 4,000 acres that include old-growth
forest, miles of lake frontage, and unsurpassed views of Mount Katahdin, have become part
of Baxter State Park. The Katahdin Lake Project is seen as being a boon for ecotourism,

As of December, 2006, the Maine
Public Utilities Commission (PUC) announced the availability of $500,000 for Mainers
interested in installing solar hot water or air systems in their homes. As a part of
Governor Baldaccis Solar Initiative, passed in 2005, the PUCs Solar Energy
Rebate Program provides rebates for solar hot water and solar air systems. The rebate
covers either 25 percent of the total costs for installation of the system or $1,250,
whichever is less. Applications and related materials, including a list of certified
installers, are available at www.maine.gov/msep. For more information, please contact
Richard Fortier at Richard.Fortier@maine.gov. The Maine Solar Energy Rebate Program, a
part of the Maine State Energy Program, administered by the Maine Public Utilities
Commission, is a statewide effort to promote the use of solar energy.
