(right) Gov. Baldacci went to Brunswick Naval Air Station (BNAS) on the day after it was slated to close, to talk to workers and offer state assistance, with members of his staff. Two and half years later BNAS is on the road to become Maine’s first center for aviation and will bring other companies with more high-tech jobs and training.

It's a  new beginning  for the former Brunswick Naval Air Station

This issue looks into how development in Maine, from businesses to communities and downtown renovation, is helping to formulate a sound economic direction and future for the state. Governor J. Baldacci — While cutting bureaucracy he has been able to create a unified community college system, ramp state education funding up to 55%, grow the economy with Pine Tree Zones and invest in R&D."We're cutting to invest in people," said the governor. No new taxes and continued savings through downsizing government on the way.

Maine's natural resources will help make Maine energy independent

  • Wind Power gets go ahead from a Governor's council report.
  • Maine’s forests were once considered golden. They still are. When the colors turn to vibrant reds and oranges, people flock into the state. Tourism is Maine’s biggest industry. The forests also offer a natural resource that with sustainable forestry practices should last forever. They are gold for Maine’s future economy. With new technologies that can turn wood waste into fuels, and with wood pellets becoming a new energy worldwide, the Pine Tree State has an economic engine that will move its economy forward.
