Governor Baldacci helped launch The Cat last spring. "You’ve got JetBlue, passenger rail, and now the ferry service from here to Halifax and back in an afternoon. I think it’s great. It’s making Maine more and more a destination place," said Governor Baldacci.

The governor served on the Transportation Committee while he was in Congress, and many of the initiatives he started are now becoming a reality. "Here in Maine we have an opportunity for regional transportation for not just Maine but Eastern Canada and the provinces; it’s exciting." For the new rail initiative see Transportation Plans

According to two independent economists, LD 1 provided property tax relief in 2005. Property tax growth dropped from 5 percent to 1.7 percent. Maine residents received $65 million in property tax relief; businesses received $10 million.  For a previous article click on Perry

Referendum Questions:

Question 1: Citizen Initiative (tabor) Do you want to limit increases in state and local government spending to the rate of inflation plus population growth and to require voter approval for all tax and fee increases?

Question 2: Constitutional Amendment Do you favor amending the Constitution of Maine to state that a citizens' initiative or people's veto petition must be submitted to local or state officials by the constitutional deadline in order to be certified and, in the case of a citizens' initiative, must be filed with the Secretary of State within 18 months?

In 1828 the first Maine Democrat was published in Saco and ceased publication in 1878. The reinvented Maine Democrat hopes to inspire like minded people to become actively involved in their communities and state politics.

It is a volunteer run publication whose dedicated personnel believe that everyone can make a difference.
