Alex Cornell du Houx
Alex grew up in the small town of Solon, Maine
where he attended Carrabec High School. He was accepted to Bowdoin
College as a Mitchell Scholar and joined the Marine Reserves in 2002.
A History and Government major, he spent most of his initial years at
college founding and building the Community Service Council, working
for Habitat for Humanity and in the Governor's office, tutoring,
serving as co-president of the Maine College Democrats, and running
track. He is currently writing a thesis on the relationship between
political engagement and community service.
Though Alex has taken pictures for as long as he can remember, he
really began to develop his photographic skills when he became
interested in astronomy; in middle school he built a manually-operated
device that could be used with a camera to track the stars as they
moved across the night sky, eliminating streaks in long exposures and
allowing him to take clear, bright photographs of comet Hale-Bopp and
other late-night phenomena. Since then, his love for photography has
grown to include journalistic and candid styles, capturing beautiful and poignant
moments on the stage, campus, and throughout the world. His involvement
in community service, the marines, and the College Democrats
has afforded him many unique opportunities to develop and pursue his
passion for photography. He currently works as a paid photographer on
the Bowdoin campus and continues to create pictures that reflect
life's beauty, turmoil, and humor.
