Like birds, sick children can learn to fly

Some 40 years since she chronicled a remarkable effort to help two young sparrows learn to fly, Kathleen "Katie" Ouilette has published the short story, Two Birds in a Box.
But the story about the sparrows, found in the barn when Ouilette lived in Mountain Lakes, N.J., has taken on more meaning in the past few years. Ouilette has dedicated the book to Landon Ouilette, her great-grandson who has successfully battled cancer for three years, since he was 5.
Polar Bear & Company of Solon has published the yellow softbound book, and Ouilette already is busy with book signings. Emily du Houx of Solon, a fine arts major at Amherst College, did the illustiatioris.
In addition to the sparrows, Ouilette uses her children Craig and Russell Denis and Lynn Denis-Rooney as the main characters in the true — but hard to believe — story.
